5.25% Raise will be in
October Checks
Our 5.25% raise will be reflected in the October check. Teachers will see a large increase in this one check because not only will the raise be there, but also back pay for the raise and step increase if you are due one. The November check will drop back to what it should be, reflecting the raise and step. Support staff will see their back pay and raise sooner, since they are paid every two weeks.

School Board Chairman
Betty Combs Vice-Chair
The School Board voted in a new chair (Jack Bales) at the regular September meeting on Monday. Larry Harris, previous chair, has served for the past four years - the limit for consecutive years as chairperson. Betty Combs was voted in as vice-chair.
Mr. Bales thanked the Board for its confidence in him and thanked Mr. Harris on behalf of the Board for his excellent four years as Board Chair. Mr. Harris then thanked the Board, Director of Schools Glenn Arwood, and the staff and teachers for their support the past four years. Mr. Arwood talked about how well Mr. Harris had led the Board and how he has confidence in Mr. Bales to continue that leadership.
Mr. Arwood also stated that the system enrollment was at 12, 351. He also introduced Meredith Charles, who is assuming the School Health Coordinator position. Mr. Arwood thanked Mr. Joe Mike Akard and his staff for their continued work at Blountville Middle School and their work in keeping the air conditioning working at the schools during this record heat.

School Board Approves
New Alternate School
for 2008-2009!!!
Finally!!! After almost 10 years of the SCEA trying to get a true alternate school for consistent offenders and faced with a room full of teachers, the Sullivan County School Board voted to set up the school for the 2008-2009 school year.
Many thanks to Jane Hicks, Chairperson and SCEA representative of the Alternate School Committee, who worked tirelessly on bringing the Alternate School to fruition. Thanks also go out to school board member Ron Smith who made the motion tonight to set up the school. Mr. Smith also served on the committee, along with teachers, principals, and central office personnel.
The school will be modeled after the one in Morristown, which has been very successful. The Board agreed to set up the grades 7-12 Alternate School. The committee has also worked on the Elementary Alternate school, which we hope will follow soon after this one opens.
This school will be the best thing that has happened to education in Sullivan County in decades. Please thank your school board members, who all voted for the school.
The SCEA will bring you details on how the school will be set up and how it will operate as details are worked out by the Board and the committee. Thanks once again to the committee and the leadership of the SCEA for sticking with this project for almost a decade! Our diligence has paid off!!!

Negotiations Teams
Agree to 5.25% Raise
The SCEA and Sullivan County School Board negotiations teams tentatively agreed to a 5.25% true raise for all professional employees. The Board must approve the final package, as well as the membership of the SCEA. Also, all agreements are pending funding from the Sullivan County Commission.
It is important that teachers attend the May 7th School Board meeting at 6:30 at the Central Office. The Board will be voting on the agreed raise. Also, a vote on starting an Alternate School may be voted on. We have been trying to get this school for more than ten years!
So - come to this board meeting and show your support for both the raise and the Alternate School. See you there!!!

The SCEA - keeping you informed!
