Membership
You and I are members of the world’s largest teacher representative group in the world! The NEA is 2.6 million members strong and speaks with clout for the children in public schools. TEA is Tennessee’s number one teacher organization with over 60,000 teachers and education employees. It is the single largest lobbying group in our state. Our local organization, SCEA, successfully negotiates on your behalf to make our benefits one of the best in the state. As a member of NEA, TEA, and SCEA, you have a voice in those policies that affect public education.
Other advantages of being a member are our legal protection and liability insurance. Many people have the misconception that the two are the same. Liability Protection is an insurance policy provided by NEA that protects a member when a suit is brought against him related to civil injury. Some teachers rely on homeowners insurance and some rely on policies provided by school boards. If you are one of those teachers, READ THE FINE PRINT VERY CAREFULLY. You may be dismayed at what you find.
Legal Protection is an even bigger issue than liability insurance. A policy provided by the school board does not offer teachers any protection when that school board brings action against a teacher. A teacher, in that case, will need legal representation. NEA/TEA members have that protection. Homeowners insurance and School Board Insurance will not help you then!
Our local association in conjunction with TEA and NEA offers many in-service training sessions. You can learn more about instructional issues, improving classroom management skills, or gain leadership skills at no additional cost to members.
I am proud to say that I belong to an Association that works to improve public education for our children and offers so many wonderful benefits for its members.
We are the NEA/TEA/SCEA!
